Choosing the Right Legal Tech: Where Do You Start?

The Legal Tech Implementation Forum was represented by John Lindsey yesterday, and he brought the perspective of someone who has spent around a decade building, distributing and deploying legal technology, having previously run and later sold a legal tech software company. His experience has given him insight into both the vendor and buyer sides of technology implementation.

Throughout the session, Lindsey’s focus was clear: technology should solve genuine problems rather than satisfy pressure to appear innovative. His emphasis on practical value, usability and sustainable adoption shaped much of the discussion. Raymond Blyd, from Legalcomplex, an audience member, also joined the conversation, contributing a European perspective on legal technology, AI infrastructure, investment and regulation.

Overview

The discussion began with a simple message: define the problem before choosing the technology. Lindsey encouraged firms to identify workflow pain points, such as client intake, document drafting, billing or case tracking, and prioritise technology that makes everyday work easier.

The conversation then turned to choosing and assessing providers. Lindsey highlighted practice-area fit, integration, security, compliance, cost and vendor stability. Blyd added that legal professionals often work across numerous technologies that do not integrate smoothly, making interoperability an important part of any purchasing decision.

The session also explored the rapidly changing legal AI landscape. Blyd highlighted European challenges around regulation, data, infrastructure and investment, while Lindsey discussed the pace of investment and consolidation in the US market. Both perspectives reinforced the need to consider long-term cost, scalability and ROI rather than simply choosing the latest technology.

Key Takeaways

  • Start with the problem: Identify genuine workflow friction before choosing technology.
  • Focus on practical value: Tools that make daily work easier are more likely to be adopted.
  • Consider the wider ecosystem: Integration, security and compliance matter alongside functionality.
  • Assess long-term costs: Licensing, AI token usage and infrastructure can significantly affect ROI.
  • Evaluate vendor stability: Consider whether the provider and technology can evolve with your firm’s needs.
